Joslyn D. Cunningham (she/her) is the Founder and CEO of Blissful Birthing Doula Services LLC in Indianapolis, IN. She was born and raised on the far east side of Indianapolis, where she learned the importance of building and uplifting community members. Blissful Birthing Doula Services LLC was established in February 2020, before she attended her first birth in the summer of 2020.
Her birth work journey began with her own experiences during pregnancy. After realizing she was grossly undereducated about birth and birth-related outcomes, she decided that no one should have to experience birth without being well-informed and supported.
She uses her voice, experiences, and expertise to empower birthing persons and their families while collaborating with doulas, midwives, and community change-makers to initiate equitable shifts within the birth world. Throughout her career, Joslyn has held multiple roles across healthcare, education, and non-profit sectors, including Senior Manager of Business Consulting and her current role as the Director of Community Advancement for JUST Community Inc. Her leadership is marked by a collaborative approach that prioritizes equity, operational excellence, and the co-creation of solutions with community members.
Joslyn is currently a fellow in the inaugural Perinatal Mental Health Alliance of Color Fellowship housed within Postpartum Support International. She is also the current Board Treasurer for the Indiana Breastfeeding Coalition, a co-chair for The Little Timmy Project’s BIPOC Doula Scholarship and a member of the Indy Melanated Birthworker Collective.
Outside of birth work, Joslyn is an avid comic-book reader, moviegoer, and music lover and spends her summers attending concerts and hanging out with her three daughters.

My desire to become a midwife began in high school. I had the privilege of access to a vocational program for high school students where I was trained as a nurse’s assistant on a labor unit. I quickly fell in love with the beauty and power of labor and birth. I then attended Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing in Peoria, Illinois where I did my senior internship with NaPro physicians. It was there that I first experienced the unique joy of watching women love their bodies through the lens of their fertility. As a nurse, I worked on an LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) unit, and then in oral and maxillofacial surgery. I attended Georgetown University and earned a dual Nurse Midwifery/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner degree. Throughout midwifery school, I intentionally sought out clinical rotations that would allow me to learn about and serve diverse populations and continue to shape my identity as a midwife-working with the Indian Health Service, FQHC's, and hospital-based midwifery.
I graduated in May of 2020 as a CNM and spent the first two years of my career exclusively in the community setting-both home and birth center. I now work in an integrated OBGYN/CNM model and am attending birth center and hospital births. My practice functions as a haven for outlying community birth transfers which brings me unique joy to be able to respectfully receive community transfers.
Now, years after attending my first birth, the feeling never grows old – every birth brings its own unique beauty! My favorite part of birth is the face of the mother as she sees her baby for the first time.
Experiencing pregnancy, birth, and postpartum myself offered me a new perspective of women’s bodies as well as the importance of a supportive prenatal and birth team-especially in the face of a changing plan. I am exceptionally passionate about a woman and her family’s right to informed birth choices.

Joi Crenshaw, CPM, CDEM, Childbirth Educator, Holistic Health Advocate
I am Joi Crenshaw—mother of five, a seasoned health professional, and a multifaceted woman on a mission to celebrate the beauty in every human’s journey.
My journey into midwifery and maternal health advocacy began with a deep-seated desire to serve families with compassion and respect. After obtaining my nursing assistant certification at McKenzie Career Center, I took a deeper dive into health education at the University of Indianapolis, where I studied nursing. I found my calling in supporting families during their most sacred moments—pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Driven by my commitment to holistic care, I became a certified Bosom Buddy for the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition and embarked on a path as a birth doula. Yet, I felt a calling to further serve my community through midwifery. Guided by my passion, I pursued training at the National College of Midwifery and apprenticed with Home4Birth and Sol Midwifery Services in my hometown of Indianapolis, IN.
Today, as a dedicated midwife at Sol Midwifery Services, Vice President of the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition, and Vice President of the Indiana Midwives Association, I continue to advocate for equitable and safe maternal health care. I am also proud to be clinical faculty at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, where I help shape the next generation of compassionate midwives.
I am a contributing author to the book Mother Through Pain and Surviving in Silence: A Collection of Stories from Survivors (2013) and served as a contributing writer for the Indianapolis Moms Blog from 2016 to 2017. My expertise has led me to be featured on many maternal health panels for the Indiana Black Expo and Purdue University, as well as to educate students at institutions like Butler University on the midwifery model of care.
In 2024, I developed a childbirth education curriculum for the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition to be offered free to the community, empowering families with essential knowledge for their journeys into parenthood.
At the heart of my mission lies "The JJ Way," inspired by my deep belief that safe and compassionate birth care should be accessible to all. I believe that if birth is made safe for Black birthing families, it will be safe for all families. "You must act as if it were possible to radically change the world. And you have to do it all the time." - Angela Davis
